Open Your Eyes You Can Fly

The youngest child of a Holiness Church travelling evangelist, she was strictly brought up, with even some gospel music considered to be too worldly. She attended Houston County High School where she sang in several choirs, and in small groups. These various groups won regional and state medals and in her last year, a National Choral Award. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Georgia State University in Atlanta. There, she briefly studied music performance before opting instead to opt for practical tuition, singing with small jazz groups and learning the repertoire of the great standards, although she did spend some time as a student of Dee Daniels in Vancouver, Canada. In mid-1998, Wright relocated to Macon, Georgia, but travelled widely, regularly visiting Atlanta where she could both hear jazz and sit in. In 1999, she joined the Atlanta-based band, In The Spirit, and began receiving media attention, albeit only locally.
