Google android mobile operating system

When Google joined the cellular phone market, they created Android, their first smartphone operating system. Based on Linux, the Android OS promises power, flexibility, and extendability.HTC was the first to introduce a device that will run the Android OS, the G1. Android is not only an OS but a software platform. This gives all cellular manufacturers the ability to build new device that can use Android.

The Android platform is completely open-source, allowing any developer to tap into its full power and create some pretty cool apps. Check out some of the winners of the Android Developer Challenge.

HTC Hero being sold for $99 at Best Buy?

It seems that $99 is one of the two magic price points of the holiday season (with $199 being the other one).  The AT&T BlackBerry Curve 8520 ("coming soon"), HTC Droid Eris, and Apple iPhone fall into the $99 category, along with the Sprint's HTC Hero.  Though the price remains at $179.99 on the carrier's website (after mail-in rebate), rumors are pointing to a price drop to $99 at Best Buy locations.  Sure, you have to sign...

It's been rumored, rumored, and rumored a little bit more, but the Dell Mini 3i is now official for China Mobile and Brazil's Claro.  The much anticipated Android smartphone will be offered in a 3G flavor for Claro in Brazil, while China Mobile will have to make do with a non-3G unit.  Pricing and specifications remain unknown, though rumors point to a Brazilian release with Wi-Fi - similar to that of the US-bound 3iX.  According...

Adriana is live at the Samsung/T-Mobile joint press conference in New York City. She just texted me to say that the phone has officially been announced as available November 18 for $229 on contract. This contradicts widespread reports of a $199 price point that hit the Web earlier this week. So I texted her back saying, "Whoa, $229? Are you sure?" She hasn't replied. Probably because she doesn't have time to type out, "Yes, Noah, I'm sure. I...

While DroidDoes bash the iPhone, DroidDoesn't come close to the weekend sales numbers of the popular smartphone. At least that's the estimate coming from Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie.  According to his math, Verizon Wireless had approximately 200,000 Motorola Droid units available at launch, and the nation's largest wireless carrier was able to liquidate approximately half of their inventory last weekend. “I see the first...

Despite the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris being on the sales floor for just under a week, it appears that Verizon is preparing a software update for each.  The OTA revision, which is rumored to hit on December 11th, is said to correct a number of known software issues with the two devices.  I have to give credit to Verizon - instead of letting the issues spread, they're taking proactive steps to fix the reported problems. The boys at the FCC have just given approval to the Dell Mini 3iX in US form factor - 3G on the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands, along with Wi-Fi.  It will offer a 3.5-inch touchscreen, 3G connectivity, GPS, a microSD card slot, and a 3.0-megapixel camera.  No word on what Android OS it will be running, but the hope is that it will run Android 2.0 "Eclair" out of the box (or some sort of newer Android build). Droid Shortcomings

Droid Shortcomings

I was really excited about the possibility of getting the new Droid.  Now maybe not so much.  There are 2 things that apparently the Droid cannot do, and without them I'm stuck. 1) From everything I've read, you cannot use your bluetooth headset to initiate a call without first tapping the screen of the phone several times (if I recall correctly: once to unlock it, once to get to the contact list, and once to make the call). ...

A little advice for new/potential android users

A little advice for new/potential android users

I would like to congratulate you on your new foray into the android world. I hope that you are enjoying your new handset and that it brings you a lot of enjoyment. To those who are thinking about getting an android device, I'd like to offer up this little bit of advice. Android is not your typical phone or device. Android, in my mind, is more of a progressive device/model. When looking at a device, I can't say it enough but personal preference...

Re: Droid vs HD2

Hey cscoot03, one thing I have found out is once you buy a phone 6 months later it's old news.  I bought the Palm Pre back in June and now I have the HTC Hero. If you are on Verizon then the Droid is the best phone they have.  Have patience with windows OS. I myself love Android OS but if Sprint gets the HD2 then WM here I come. I think a lot of complaints about WM came from it being to vanilla.  Now HTC has stepped their...

Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

for me it comes to this...like noah said id all really depends what you want to use each device for. One thing i hate is messing around w the I phone, yeah a lot say its so easy to use. ok i like the way you can use your music and the way it organizes and sometimes using the web on it and other entertainment and some games. The G1 was the first android phone i got when it came out sad to say a certain someone thew it at a wall. so now im looking to get a new phone. I love android and the way it is used to communicate. I just like the over all lay out and how everything is so customizable. Hands down as a phone and over all day use also mail, texting, gps, and every other way to do what i like is android. what i would like is a plain i touch and thats really only for music. of course every now and then i would use its apps but all im interested is the music. Now its just a question what Android to get. I want the Droid maybe the Hero. Havent really checked out the cliq. the behold looks nice from the outside but but didnt like how they intergrated behold and android. honestly for me personally it sucks! Android rocks! !!

Re: Verizon Motorola Droid - Unboxing and Hands-On

Noah! Make iDog! You guys have a site for almost every other (beside windows mobile cuz we all know it sucks)mobile platform a phonedog site! I am begging you!

Re: Re: HTC Video #1: You Are Different From You

ok i agree that the hero should have android 2.0 but texting is fine on the phone i have the hero keyboards are for blackberrys and sidekicks lol i used the moto droid and i hated the keys on it but what would be good is if they took the touch pro 2 and put andriod 2.0 or higher on it then iam sold to but until then the hero works fine for me

Re: Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

just a suggest a keyboard upgrade. It makes the sarcasm more obvious.

Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

First of all I love my iPhone. With that said, my friend recently bought the droid and I love that phone as well. Noah delivered this review quite well. It's really a personal choice between the two phones. Plus where i live AT&T just sucks.

Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

I should have known better. Noah, please stop doing DogFights with any iPhone. You will never get over your love for it, it's obvious. Thus, PLEASE do something like the Droid vs. New WinMo phone, or various Android phones. Just understand that it's pointless to ask your opinion if an iPhone is involved.

Re: iPhone 3GS vs Motorola Droid: DogFight, Pt 3

Wake up sheeple! Can't you see the iphone is basically the "blue pill" of our time? It gives you the illusion of a smartphone or pocket computer but it's really not since it's a closed system. Just like the matrix movie where it doesn't give you what you need but dictates exactly what you need. All it really does is it very slowly drains you out of your money and gives back distraction. To me it make all iphone users look like targets, suckers and chumps. It's a symbol that you aren't smart enough to use a real pda phone, organizer, and the red pill,
