Symbian OS
Symbian OS is currently the market-leading open operating system for mobile phones. Nokia completed its acquisition of Symbian Software Ltd. this year. Nokia's brand new 5530 XpressMusic is kind of like the 5800's baby brother, except it kinda looks cooler than the 5800. No 3G or GPS here, but you do get a 16:9 touchscreen and lots of media features. And WiFi! Noah unboxes the phone that can record and playback 720p HD video. CRAZY! Hands-on with Samsung's i8910 HD - formerly known as Omnia HD. Smartphone + Messaging Phone = Smartphone for Tweens? The odd but interesting Nokia Surge is a full on smartphone in a messaging phone's body. Noah checks it out.

Joni from Let's Talk has posted some additional coverage from her week at CTIA Las Vegas. She was able to get a closer look at the Nokia E71x for AT&T. This short walk thru with the Nokia rep provides some great insight on what to expect from this soon to arrive device. More symbian os videos »
A winner at CTIA earlier in the year the Nokia E72 has officially launched. Though it's still showing as "pre order" status on Amazon's website, the S60-powered device has launched for €350 ($469 at Amazon). Sporting 10.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity, 5.0-megapixel autofocus camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD slot (4GB included in the box), A-GPS and integrated compass, and a trackpad, the E72 is a worthy successor to the... Symbian fans, break out your party pants: You’ve now got a universal app store of your very own.
Dubbed Horizon, Symbian Foundation’s software center/publishing program/mobile marketplace works for all users of the platform, unlike the software offerings from Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, which have each had their own stores for a while. All of them, however (in addition to AT&T's Media Mall), will support Horizon,... I'm not going to lie - I'm not a huge fan of Symbian. The form factor of the E71 (and E72) are absolutely gorgeous, but I've never liked the S60 platform. That being said, I am incredibly impressed with Maemo. Targeted more as a "mobile computer" than a phone, the N900 re-invigorates the Nokia line.
That being said, I'll shut up. Enjoy the pictures, and be sure to tweet me your Nokia questions, as we'll see them... Could it be? Word on the street is that Nokia is mulling over the idea of buying Palm. Wowsers. Could you imagine the N97 or the N900 with WebOS? From a business standpoint, it would make sense. When it comes to smartphones, BlackBerry and iPhone are tearing up the track. Android devices, by way of HTC or Motorola, is looming large in the headlines, especially lately. But Nokia has failed to generate buzz that’s even remotely on par with...
A 3G phone that doesn't work on 3G bands? What kind of foolishness is that?
The Nokia Mural becomes the second Nokia device in two months to be recalled on AT&T - bad publicity for both the manufacturer and carrier, and frustrating for end users. Apparently, the initial batch of Mural's aren't connecting to AT&T's 3G network; a problem, given that the phone is marketed as just that - a 3G device. Unfortunately,... Mentioned briefly in my Weekly News In Review segment (now Tidbit Tuesday) back in May as it passed through the FCC's proverbial hand, the Nokia Mural 6750 has been formally announced by the company. Featuring external "cover colors" that light up in your choice of red, blue, green, orange, purple, and pink when you receive an important notification, the Mural sports a silver RAZR-esque body with a 2.2-inch QVGA screen, S40... Since we can’t actively cover every news article that breaks (as
much as we would love to), PhoneDog compiles various announcements and
press releases that have been published throughout the week and places
them in one easy to read article. Enjoy!Android device coming to Sprint by the end of 2009At Fortune's Brainstorm: Tech event in Pasadena on Friday, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse admitted that he was glad that the company held out for the... Following in the design footsteps of the E71, Nokia's latest gem, the E72-2, has just passed through the doors of the FCC. Sporting a gold coloring, the E72 offers full HSPA on the 850 and 1900 MHz bands and quad-band EDGE and HSPA 2100 for those occasional international trips. It hasn't been picked up by a carrier as of yet, but there's always the chance for it (and should that happen, a nice subsidy as a result). Until it's... Despite the announcement today from AT&T, we had knownabout the Nokia Surge 6790 for quite a while (though at the time, it wascodenamed "Mako"). Marketed at younger users with a "social circle," the Surge offers a sliding QWERTYkeyboard, Symbian S60, 2.4-inch screen, 3G, A-GPS, Exchange and personal e-mail support, FM radio, stereo Bluetooth, full HTML web browser, and AT&T Navigator. It will be available in stores and online... The Guardian recently published the erroneous report that mobile manufacturer Nokia had an Android device in the works, but a company spokesperson set the record straight today, responding, "[there is] absolutely no truth to this whatsoever." And in order to reaffirm the need for blushing: "Everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices." That may be the case, but everyone also knows that Symbian is... More symbian os articles »Re: Re: Nokia N900 and E72 hit the shelvesOnly deal-breaker for me on the n900 is the stupid resistive touchscreen. If they where to put a capacitive (with multitouch, anyone?) i would absolutely love it. But i ain't going back to outdated phones with resistive touchscreen s. I hate them.. they jost don't work well for me.Re: Not to be forgotten, Nokia E72 hits the shelvesI own an e71 and while it is a solid phone (as in very reliable cell reception) the OS is becoming dated. Re: Not to be forgotten, Nokia E72 hits the shelvesnice phone well the specs are but i don't really like the osRe: Nokia N900 and E72 hit the shelvescompletely excited about the N900, but many people have called it like the G1, ONLY in the sense that it is a somewhat Prototype of what future Maemo 5 devices may look like... Re: Nokia N97I was quite excited when I was getting my N97. Everything worked fine for me until one night it started to have a little problem. Everything was lagging and had a hard time getting reception when the place I was at had reception. I was unable to make a phone call or text. My home screen did not load to what it should have. My favorite contacts' pictures did not load. The shortcuts did not load. I tried going into the main menu, it worked, but after selecting an application, it kept me at the main menu. I tried restarting the handset multiple times, even removing the battery (and the battery cover is so crappy). Results were the same after countless times of rebooting, even when I left it to load at home screen. I could not make phone calls or received phone calls. The next day, I had to spend 6 hours backing up my files, resetting it to factory setting, and retrieving my files. Ever since then, it would reboot itself when it is unable to load one of the games, youtube, or just viewing a picture. What I like most about it is the 32GB internal memory, 3.5G 5MP camera, wifi, speakers, QWERTY key-pad, and the screen tilted when slide open. Although, some of the features are not bad, there are still so many bugs that I happen to encounter over the use in the past three months.Re: Rumor: Is Nokia prepping a Palm takeover? Nokia is really bring a good product for their coustor and i hope that its this news phone is very nice and its features are amazing. http://ezinearticles.com/?Premium-White-Pro-Review---Does-Free-Trial-Really-Work?&id=3205919Re: Nokia N97Horrible horrible phone. I could POSSIBLY have lived with it if it was only the terrible software that was at fault, with it constant crashing, freezing, poor/slow reactions and prehistoric looks (not that i'm all too fussed about menu looks!) I was once a symbian 60 fan, but after this abomination of a phone, never again. One would expect a reasonable amount of refinement from such an established pair, Nokia and the Symbian os BUT there are things wrong here that should never be an issue!! A lock key that gets easily confused (even on fw12) the mentioned impossibility to boot the phone after it shuts down, constant program and web page crashes (this is the second time i've had to type this, as after I'd completed it the first time on the N97 the browser crashed and I lost it all) The theme 'effects' add nothing to the user experience but more waiting/lag.
The hardware, well, not only do phones that are nearing on 2 years old have faster processors and twice the ram, but it doesn't even use what it has efficiently.
Not only are the specs borderline acceptable for the cost, but the built quality is dubious at best! as my name suggests, i'm now on my 4th N97 (which is going back tomorrow and being exchanged for ANYTHING else) as they've all had failures within the first week-month. Not only have there been failures but many inconsistencies also, i'll try and give you a quick rundown.
I've had one battery fail completely and the phone constantly freezing/resetting/making odd noises that were only curable by removing the battery (cheap creaky cover by the way). out of the 4 phones 2 had gps that did NOT work AT ALL and another (current one) takes 15minutes (still, in open ground) to get a lock to the astonishing accuracy of 90-120m, and if youre moving, don't even think about getting a lock because you'll be at the place you're trying to find by the time a lock happens. (yes, tested next to a samsung omnia HD, which had not had a lock on that location before yet still managed 10-15sec lock and 10-15m accuracy). 2 of the 4 fm transmitters had a range/quality that made them unusable. One camera lens has been seriously scratched by the cover which is meant to protect it. the feedback on all 4 keypads had been different, even on different keys on the same keypad. one of the slide mechanisms had a lot more play than the other 3 (one was damn near perfect the other two were very good)
having said that, The feature list is impressive, the fm transmitter is great when it works, the camera is great in good light and pretty good at close range in low light, the 32g storage is great, it's heavy enough to feel solid, form factor is nice and the battery life is also very nice. wait until the N900 if you absolutely have to have a nokia, and give it some time to mature also. goodbye nokia, after the terrible N95 (very early one) I battled through with and this ($1200rrp) fancy paperweight, I'm off to buy an android.... It's sad when an os that's under 2 years old can outclass one that's been around for such a long time, let alone nokia putting out such bad hardware. Sorry for the long winded experience, but if it can just help even one person make a decision, it's worth it. Best of luckRe: Symbian gets app store what do yall think about tha n900??Re: Symbian gets app store I'm sold, getting the nokia e71xRe: Symbian gets app store WHEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
